SOME NOTES ON THE CONFERENCE AT SCHOOL OF 6TH OCTOBER 2015 ON DRUGS ABUSE AND PREVENTION BY DOC. EMMA PEGLI FROM THE LOCAL HEALTH CARE CENTRE.
Dependencies are many: alcohol, drugs, gambling, smoking, compulsive shopping, physical activity...
Compared to a few years ago, the scenarios have changed:
PREVENTION
How to prevent? What kind of preventive actions? Why should I avoid using drugs? At what stage should I stop using drugs? Which approaches should be used?
One subject alone, a policy carried out by a single subject does not work.
It takes a network. Regulations alone are not enough, fines, penalties are not enough, they may be cheap but effective only in the short run. There should be someone, a network of people that implement an educational action. Popular educational approaches are generally very expensive and need time.
BRAIN STORMING SESSION
At this point, during the meeting with the expert, we did a brainstorming session with questions from the educator and the reaction of the students, who were divided into groups depending on whether they agreed or disagreed about the allegations launched. For example: “do you agree that the majority of teens start smoking because they hang around with others who already smoke? Or “ Do you agree that taking drugs only once doesn’t result in addiction? “ and so on….

Compared to a few years ago, the scenarios have changed:
- A person can make use of more drugs combined together
- The variety of substances has increased.
- The use of drugs, for many people, has become part of everyday life
- There is little perception of lawlessness and risks
- The guys who use substances are younger than before
- To feel better
- To improve work performance
- To escape from everyday life

- -The positive effects are given by those people who strengthens you as a person: reinforcing your inner strength, encouraging your critical capacity, helping you meet the crucial moments in your life.
- -The peer-education projects form a group of young guys who will show other youngsters in trouble how to cope with their problems. There’s NO JUDGEMENT, there’s NO DAMAGE or RISK ASSESSMENT, but group work on what young people think: there are always different views and, since comparison is very important, this project is based on eliciting the differences and considering them as a richness for everybody.
- People taking part in this group work should also figure out what caused the risky behavior (predisposing factors, beliefs, knowledge, values, family, social background, group of friends…)
